Horizon Housing Company (HHC) will commence work today on the Gold Coast’s first ‘off-grid’ affordable residential development, which boasts an eight and a half star energy rating and will aim for self-sufficient power and water supply.
The innovative EKO:BODE project, to be developed in a sought-after location on Monaco Street in Surfers Paradise, will offer eight studio rooms with reduced rent costs by 25 per cent.
HHC chief executive Jason Cubit says EKO:BODE is a new model for development on the Gold Coast, which demonstrates that sustainable housing can be an affordable option for developers and residents.
He said while town planning regulations required connection to the water and electrical grid, the property would be the first of its kind to target net-zero ongoing energy and water use.
“We really wanted to challenge the notion that ‘green’ housing is a more expensive option,” he said.
“Ekobode will set a new benchmark for affordable, eco-friendly living, with the project to deliver inexpensive short-term accommodation targeted towards key workers.
“Designed and built by the award winning teams at Koho Architects and Rivergum Homes, this project will demonstrate that low cost does not equate to low quality,” Mr Cubit said.
“All internal and gardening water for the development will be collected from the roof via rainwater tanks, and sufficient solar systems will be installed to generate electricity equal to or greater than the amount used by residents.
“In keeping with its eco-friendly theme, EKO:BODE will also comprise a number of shared amenities, including kitchens, laundries and lounges, plus a communal vegetable garden and ample bicycle parking on site.
“The development will also be situated just 100 metres from the new Rapid Transit line, allowing residents easy access to public transport.”
EKO:BODE is being developed by HHC in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, Westpac Bank and a number of private local sponsors, including James Hardie, Aqua Clarus, A&L Windows, ecolour and Laminex.
Horizon Housing have acknowledged the support of these sponsors who have assisted in ensuring EKO:BODE boasts a suite of environmental features including; 6kw of solar power which will be fed into the grid, large rainwater tanks and water treatment and recycled and sustainable products to be used in construction and furnishings.
