HORIZON HOUSING TAKES SUSTAINABLE BUILDING HONOURS

Horizon Housing Company (HHC) is set to boost its eco-credentials by building Australia’s first boutique, affordable residential project to be awarded top honours under the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) EnviroDevelopment scheme.

HHC’s EKO:BODE project, which  is currently under construction on Monaco Street, Broadbeach, will receive  full certification in all six EnviroDevelopment elements – Ecosystems, Waste, Energy, Materials, Water and Community.

The EnviroDevelopment badge is only awarded to projects considered to be leaders in sustainability, with just 17 developments nationwide boasting full accreditation.

HHC chief executive Jason Cubit said he was thrilled EKO:BODE would be the first EnviroDevelopment project of its kind.

“This EnviroDevelopment award is testament that we have achieved our goal of creating a new model for housing which is affordable, stylish and sustainable,” Mr Cubit said.

“EKO:BODE will take innovation to the next level, by aiming to become the Gold Coast’s first ‘off-grid’ residential development, with an  eight and a half star energy rating and self-sufficient power and water supply.

“The development also embraces the concept of communal facilities including shared laundries, lounges, kitchens, an on site vegetable garden and bike racks to reduce building and rent costs and minimise energy and water consumption.

“Rain water tanks and solar panels will also be installed, along with a suite of eco-friendly fittings and finishes throughout the building.”

Mr Cubit said EKO:BODE would comprise eight studio apartments and was designed to meet the needs of workers looking for affordable, short-term accommodation, with 3-6 month leases available.

“This project will appeal to people relocating to the Gold Coast and looking for a place to stay while they establish a permanent job and residence, or even those who already live and work on the Coast but need a temporary base to help them save money.

“This type of housing could also be adapted for students and retirees, who want to live independently but are happy to share some common facilities for financial and social benefits.”

EKO:BODE is being developed by HHC in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, Westpac Bank and a number of private local sponsors, including James Hardie, Aqua Clarus, A&L Windows, ecolour and Laminex.

Horizon Housing have acknowledged the support of these sponsors who have assisted in ensuring EKO:BODE boasts a suite of environmental features including; 6kw of solar power which will be fed into the grid, large rainwater tanks and water treatment and recycled and sustainable products to be used in construction and furnishings.

EKO:BODE is expected to be complete by mid 2012.
